- Yes, I read those, and I can identify no tangible improvement from one version to the next. I don't get any more detail on the bodies, the dark vertical band is spurious, and frankly, the snow is not the subject of the picture. The main impression I'm left with is that your proposed replacement has a grey cast, and the grain in the sky has been brought out = made worse. My personal opinion is that this is a lost cause - dark bodies on dark background, and if you think about it for a moment, this circumstance has actually become part of the history of the picture. - Actually this restoration rediscovered those bodies: the Library of Congress staff hadn't been aware there were human remains in the photograph. This restoration caused them to update their records, and afterward the find was incorporated into the official program notes for an exhibit of historic photography at the Montréal Museum of Fine Art.
